10 Reasons to Switch to Safer Skincare and Better Beauty

Updated: Jan 4

If you are making the switch to a healthier lifestyle, personal care products are at the top of the list next to food. What goes on your body is just as important as what goes in it.

Did you know?

  • The United States has not passed a major federal law regulating the cosmetics industry since 1938.

  • There are more than 80,000 chemicals on the market today. Many don’t have any safety data. This is particularly true of those used in the skin care and beauty industry.

  • The $62 billion beauty industry is regulated by approximately two pages of federal law.

  • Over the past two decades, the European Union has banned close to 1,400 chemicals in the product formulas of personal care products and restricted the levels of over 250 more in such products. The United States has only partially banned 30 to date.

  • Women aged 20-45 are exposed to an average of 186 chemicals in their personal care products every day.

Remember, brands can say almost anything about their personal care products, but we don't truly know they're safe until we test. Snake venom and poison ivy are "natural" and organic rose petals “should” be safe, but if they're collected and stored in plastic bags, then BPA and other hormone-disrupting chemicals were added without anyone knowing; or maybe a neighboring farm uses pesticides that contaminate the organic field. A lot of mineral makeup contains "natural", but still toxic, heavy metals. You'd never know, unless you test!

Beautycounter screens and tests. What's the difference?

  • Screening means performing exhaustive research through multiple science-backed studies and channels (such as PubMed and ChemPub) with evidence-backed publications of studies that we can all learn from.

  • Testing means the exact tests performed, which ultimately also get turned into the same publications others can then use to screen.

10 reasons to switch to Beautycounter for safer skincare and cosmetics:

  1. Beautycounter is a Certified B Corporation, which is a rigorous third-party certification that ensures a business equally considers people, planet, and profit.

  2. Beautycounter chooses the best organic, natural, sustainable, and synthetic ingredients that meet our standards. Over 80% of the ingredients in our products are natural or plant-derived.

  3. Beautycounter strives to source all of our ingredients from sustainable, non-GMO suppliers and we are transparent about what is in our formulas.

  4. Beautycounter is Leaping Bunny Certified; we do not test products or ingredients on animals.

  5. The Never List™: Beautycounter prohibits the use of 1,500+ questionable or harmful ingredients when formulating our products.

  6. Beautycounter third-party tests each batch of color cosmetics for heavy metals, setting our limits below those regions with the most health-protective standards in the world: the European Union and Health Canada.

  7. Beautycounter tests their products FIVE times for body & skin products and SIX times for makeup, including every batch.

  8. Among what is tested, Beautycounter looks at 23 human health endpoints (of which heavy metals, reproductive health, hormone disruption, and carcinogens are just a few); they test in house for PPT (trillion, not million!) levels with an argon plasma jet, delivering lower limits than any other brand in the industry!

  9. Not only does Beautycounter test six iterative times for makeup, and five times for body, but tests also include in bottles, in packaging, and then tested at extreme temps for extended periods of time to maximize any affects of testing for leeched contaminants.

  10. Because Beautycounter is performing science-based tests with 3rd party vendors such as Tufts University, their results help other brands screen more easily and affordably, helping the overall industry become safer for human health. Our mission really is to get safer ingredients into the hands of everyone!
